Patrick Richards

Patrick is an experienced IP attorney, serial entrepreneur, and adjunct professor who focuses on using intellectual property to drive commercial value.


Patrick RichardsPatrick has written, licensed, and enforced medical innovation patents since the first days of his legal career, starting with the first patent he wrote directed to a unique medical device for the University of Virginia in 1999. In addition to his extensive medical innovation patent writing and litigating experience, for several years, Patrick taught a course in medical innovation at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. As a co-founder of health-tech company developing software for neuromodulation and other sensory enhancing devices, he understands the business side of health care intellectual property issues.

Patrick’s experience in the health care industry touches every corner of the IP field, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, and Patrick is also experienced in rights acquisition, enforcement, sales and licensing.

Beyond his health care experience, Patrick has prosecuted thousands of patents in an array of fields. He has deep experience in trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and software licensing. He also assists clients in drafting agreements with their employees, contractors, vendors, suppliers, distributors, licensees, licensors, etc. to address any intellectual property concerns in those relationships. Patrick enjoys working with businesses to find the best path for protecting their inventions, distinguishing their brands, and growing their bottom line. He is adept at both a high-level strategy, as well as detailed problem solving. Patrick takes pride in patiently helping clients understand and evaluate their options before moving forward to take the appropriate legal action.

Patrick’s clients cover a broad range of industries, including technology, food and nutraceuticals, fintech, biotech and life science, consumer products, transportation, and construction. He not only counsels’ clients with respect to U.S. laws and protection, but also assists them with their international needs as well.

Patrick was previously a partner in the Intellectual Property, Media and Technology group of McDermott Will & Emery LLP, a large international general practice law firm headquartered in Chicago. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Pritzker Northwestern School of Law.
